The Nigerian Election Working Group (NEWG) is a group of credible and respected Nigerians who are experts in election research and practical election management. It is expected that they will bring together theoretical thinking, field experience and empirical information about elections to support improvements to the electoral process.
They include respected academics on elections, former leaders of Nigeria’s election management institutions, renowned and respected civil society practitioners and persons who have worked in electoral support with development partners. This approach is different from other approaches in which academics, election managers and civil society organizations, all of who are committed to improving the electoral process, nevertheless work separately, sometimes at cross-purposes.
By building collaboration and synergies across these constituencies, this approach has better prospects of generating innovative and sustainable ideas, improving peer learning, as well as achieving moral suasion and credibility in the eyes of the public. It is therefore more likely than other approaches to be successful.
